Who is this guy? Campbell Vertesi is an operatic bass, of the very low sort. His fach is sometimes called "Basso Profundo" - that's Italian for "he sings really low." Even lower than most basses, which is a bit frightening. He specializes in bass roles like Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), and Colline (La Bohème). This site chronicles Campbell's progress as he begins a career as a young opera singer. Eugh - I'm not particularly a Milnes fan, but I refuse to engage in Internet Opera Queen Bickering here. I consider myself very well versed on great singers of the 20th Century, and I had never heard Giacomini sing before this post! He is famous, but not on the scale of Domingo or Del Monaco, certainly.
And someone mentioned Jon Vickers - I'm a fan. Totally unique sound, and a phenomenal actor... he revolutionized Peter Grimes. Maybe most importantly for me, he was very conscious of himself as an artist, and gave serious thought to his responsibility in that role. I don't necessarily agree with his conclusions, but I have a lot of respect for someone who engages in that discussion consciously, as I do.
