Six degrees of separation in opera

Submitted by Campbell Vertesi on Wed, 2007-03-14 00:50.

Today your intrepid blogger received a friend request from one of his favorite blogosphere-colleagues: the almost-famous ACB (of the concert fame).

Once I got over my stardom jitters, and accepted the request, I did the traditional social-network-stalker dance, and perused through ACB's posted pictures... only to find them chockerblock full of mutual friends!  Well, hardly chockerblock - that's a lot of block - but a surprising amount of connection nonetheless.  It took me a full second or so to realize that my shock was totally unwarranted.

I work in a very small industry.  Everyone knows everyone else here - and the higher you get up that young artist/career ladder, the smaller the group gets.  Is it any surprise that some of the good singers I know end up in the same places, working for the same companies?  I uncover this kind of connection with my colleagues every day.  Still, it never ceases to amaze.

 Opera in the A state

One of my best friends is out of town right now, doing a several-month tour in Arkansas. An outreach tour in Arkansas. Every few days we talk on the phone, and she has so many great stories, about touring through small town - REALLY small town - America.

So, after much cajoling, she finally started a blog, where she can share her stories with the world! So without further ado:

Shout out: Amanda Ingram

Submitted by Campbell Vertesi on Sun, 2007-02-04 12:25.

Completely off-topic: A shout out to my colleague and friend Amanda Ingram. She sang Little Buttercup with me at Dayton Opera, and she was very excited to learn that I had a blog.  "Will you write about me on it?" She asked...

The answer is yes.  Yes Amanda, I will write about you on my blog.  Amanda Ingram is a total jerk, a mean and spiteful colleague, and can't hold a tune.   She parks in handicap spaces, litters, and eats babies.  Oh wait, small inaccuracy here: she doesn't actually litter.

OK, the truth is that she's a wonderful person, very friendly and pleasant to work with, and she sings beautifully.  She's going to Central City this summer, and i know she'll have a great time.

And now I've written about her on my blog. :)
